Late in the first half of his team’s matchup against FC Tulsa Sunday evening, Chattanooga FC’s Fynn Glover got tangled up with Tulsa’s Abed Elkour while the two were jockeying for a ball, resulting in a foul on Elkour.
Glover looked as though he had taken exception to the play itself, but instead chose to smile and give Elkour a hug before running back on offense.

Mandan Park Board members want to firm up building costs before they convert part of a water park into a 24/7 fitness center. They will consider action at their March 8 board meeting.
More than 40 people gathered at Raging Rivers on Monday for a special board meeting to view what could be the fitness area’s new home.
Parks and recreation director Cole Higlin said it would cost nearly $75,000 to convert the former laser tag area inside water park offices into an area for free weights and cardio equipment. He expected with revenue generated, it could run in the black.
Floor plans show that 3,500 square feet of the south end of the building could be used as a fitness area.
Higlin said after two bathroom/changing areas are added, there is room for 2,700 square feet of cardio and free weight equipment space.

The fitness area and an existing south door entrance would be separated from water park users by installing a wall. Higlin estimated 24-hour security software would cost $15,000.
A common information booth would serve both the water park and fitness area.
Higlin said construction work for the fitness center could be sought in quotes because the project would run less than $100,000. The $26,000 in cardio equipment leases would have to be bid out.

The facility will be the new home of park district offices after they exit the Mandan Community Center by July 1.
Higlin noted many of the operating costs listed for the fitness center are already needed for office area.
The park district will continue to operate the indoor swimming pool at the community center under an agreement with the school district. Those attending Monday’s meeting were told fitness membership fees could still be tied to the indoor pool, and operations there wouldn’t change.
The school district will renovate the rest of the community center into office and classroom space after it takes ownership from the city.
Higlin said the park system could sell $30,000 in cardio equipment to the school district and use that revenue to lease new cardio equipment with TV screens. Free weights from the community center would be moved to Raging Rivers.

Park board president Tracy Porter said the park district conducted a survey that indicated “people are willing to wait for a recreation center (and) … support the district in having a fitness center.” Porter said over the past 14 months, the park board has considered owning the community center, building a full recreation center, building a “tent-like recreation center,” and creating a fitness center at other sites.
He said while the park district wants a full recreation center with basketball courts, a walking track and other features, the board wishes to pay off other district improvements first.
Higlin is confident the construction work could be done by the July 1 deadline.
Board members were urged to make the information booth smaller and push the wall farther north to allow for more equipment in the floor plans of the fitness center.

NEW YORK — Costco Wholesale Corp. is bullish about its future growth, although management remains cautious about the short-term retail landscape.
During the company’s annual investors conference, which was held at the site of its first warehouse club in Manhattan the day before its grand opening, chief financial officer Richard Galanti told analysts that he and other executives are “keeping our fingers crossed” that consumers will pick up the shopping pace in the last weeks of the holiday season.
The company has achieved improved comparable-club sales in the last two months and has seen revived demand for such higher-margin general merchandise categories as sporting goods, clothing and cameras.
Despite the current economic malaise, Costco announced an aggressive expansion program that will accelerate over the next five years. The company sees substantial growth opportunities abroad, particularly in its Asian markets of Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Australia.
At the close of its 2009 fiscal year on August 30, 153 of the 559 Costco warehouse clubs in operation were international units.
Plans call for 15 to 20 warehouse openings for the current 2010 fiscal year and up to 20 new units in both fiscal 2011 and 2012. In fiscal 2013 and 2014, however, the target number increases to more than 25.
Executives estimate that in Japan–where few American retailers have done well–as well as Taiwan and Korea, Costco could operate as ed hardy clothing many as 100 stores. In Australia, its newest market, they calculate that Costco could open as many as 20 locations.

A new Democratic Senator from West Virginia is all but certain to provide the 60th vote needed to pass an extension of federal unemployment benefits this week, but that did not stop Democrats from taking a parting political swipe at Republicans.
President Obama led the attack from the Rose Garden, criticizing the refusal of GOP lawmakers in the Senate to vote in favor of extending the benefits, which comes with a price tag of $33 billion, all of which would be added to the nation’s $1.3 trillion deficit.

“Republican leaders in the Senate are advancing a misguided notion that emergency relief somehow discourages people from looking for a job,” said Obama, flanked by three out-of-work people waiting for federal benefits. “Well, I think that reflects a lack of faith in the American people.”
The bill would reinstate 73 weeks of federal unemployment benefits beyond the 26 weeks now provided by the states.
The federal benefits expired June 4, and since then 2.2 million people who would have qualified for the additional help have not been able to collect jobless pay. The bill would keep the benefits in place until December.
Senate Republicans have repeatedly offered deals to pay for the bill. Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, for instance, put forward a plan earlier this month that would have redirected unused money from the $800 billion stimulus to pay for half of the unemployment extension.
But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., rejected the offer. Democrats say unemployment benefits qualify as emergency spending and do not have to be paid for.
On the Senate floor Monday, Reid, whose state has the highest unemployment rate in the country, called Republican opposition to the passage of the benefits extension “appalling and heartless.”
But Republicans aren’t the only ones blocking the bill.
In fact, two Republicans, Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both of Maine, brought Democrats within one vote of the 60 they needed to pass a benefits extension bill before leaving for the July 4 recess. But Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., refused to vote for the bill because it adds to the deficit.
Democrats are now waiting for the Tuesday arrival of Carte Goodwin, whom West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin tapped to replace the late Sen. Robert Byrd.
His arrival in the Senate had been delayed for days by Manchin, who plans to run to replace Byrd permanently and was seeking assurance from the state legislature that he could hold a special election in November.
The House, which already approved the measure last month, will have to vote on it again this week to satisfy a parliamentary issue. Most House Republicans are again expected to vote against the bill, but Democrats hold a large enough majority to
pass it.
“The American people are bone tired of deficits and debt and runaway federal spending in Washington, D.C., and they expect this Congress and this administration to do what every small business, every American family and every family farmer is doing in these difficult economic times, and that is rolling their sleeves up and making hard choices about spending,” House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence, R-Ind., said.

(NNPA)-The African-American consumer market represents the largest emerging market in the world. With revenues projected to reach $1.2 trillion by 2012 according to the U.S. Census Bureau, this market segment has more retail purchasing power than Mexico, a nation to which many U.S. companies are beating a path.
The segment has richly rewarded many retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers. Indeed the African-American consumer has built entire television networks, established new fashion trends and revolutionized the use of consumer electronic and communication tools from pagers to cell phones. We’ve “passed the Courvoisier,” “put a ring on it” and had “everybody in the club getting tipsy.” We’ve made the words “bling-bling” part of the popular culture, created a market for overpriced football jerseys (”throwbacks”) and made more ways to wear jeans than Levi could have ever imagined. But what have we received in return? I guess we’d better “blame it on the alcohol.”
This is why the actions of companies like General Motors are so disturbing today. The notion of Black people driving Cadillacs is part of the lexicon within the African-American culture. The brand has been a status symbol for the aspiration of Black leaders from Baptist preachers, to ed hardy clothing organization leaders to today’s “Bailers” whose whip of choice is the Cadillac Escalade. With such extreme brand loyalty from a segment that over-indexes and contributes 24 percent to the companies’ market share, you would expect willingness, even a strong demonstrated desire by the company to reciprocate. In a challenging economic environment why not go to our base? Look to further build a “relationship” and partner in new and more creative ways. Would it be too much to ask for support of the things that are of interest to your loyal consumers including the institutions and media outlets that deliver the messages? Clearly not, however, the research shows just the opposite. GM has taken the loyalty of the African-American consumer for granted.
Even in the boom years, the company did not spend a commensurate share of its annual advertising budget with Black-owned media outlets. And now, in tough economic times we have learned of the nearly $3 billion the company spends in annual advertising, it spent an insulting $35 million, about a third of one percent, with Black-owned media. This represents on third of a penny, for every $100 it receives from Black consumers who buy GM vehicles. The company recently received $50 billion in government bail-out monies, taxpayer dollars, many of whom are AfricanAmerican but the company is still refusing to increase its advertising spend with this core-demographic segment that has been “ride or die” with the GM brands-the African-American consumer.
Some would play “devil’s advocate” and say-why should they? Why should a company, for example, that has 95 percent penetration into the African-American consumer market and spend $0 in advertising directed toward this group-support Black-owned media? Surely, their research and consultants will tell them 4Ve can put those dollars to better use elsewhere.” Besides, what do they have to lose?
I would argue-they could lose a lot. Particularly if these same African-American consumers start to wake up, become conscious of their influence, and start to leverage their consumer retail spending power in an effective manner Definitely, if leaders like Danny Bakewell and the NNPA, are able to use the same medium available to these companies, the Black Press of America and inform their readers of the atrocity of continuing to blindly support companies that don’t respect our institutions, our community, nor our Black-owned media outlets.
