Park Picnic pop highlights tee
SOME of the hottest young musical talent in Britain gathered in Liverpool to help lead the fight against teenage cancer.
Homegrown talent, Replica watches including The Zutons’ saxophonist Abi Harding and singer Candi Payne, joined T4 presenter Miquita Oliver at the summer bandstand Topshop Picnic event, at the Isla Gladstone Conservatory, Anfield, on Saturday. The Liverpool musicians DJ’d in front of a crowd of hundreds while up-and-coming acts took to the music stage.
Abi said: “We [Candi and I] have both lost people close to us through cancer, as do millions of people around the world. So to us and many others it is a very important cause to support.”
Welsh indie popsters Los Campesinos!, critically acclaimed singer- songwriter Blue Roses, Summer Camp, Replica watches and pop rockers I Blame Coco also played.
Coco Sumner, of I Blame Coco, is the daughter of Sting and Trudie Styler.
She said: “The Teenage Cancer Trust is a brilliant cause, it provides unconditional love and support for teenage sufferers in their time of great need.” The summer bandstand picnic is a charity event taking place in green spaces across the country from London to Bristol, Birmingham and Liverpool.
Organised by Topshop and the Teenage Cancer Trust, the gigs are designed to highlight the damage done to our skin when we’re young.
Around 80% of exposure happens before the age of 21, which can lead to skin cancer later in life. Skin cancer rates in teens have doubled in the last 20 years, and it is now the second most common form of the disease in those aged 15 to 34.
The bandstand event offered shaded areas for visitors to relax out of the sun and free sun screen as temperatures in Liverpool shot up to 20C.
