Mavericks 96, Clippers 86 DALLAS ( AP) – Prop up your feet, Dirk Nowitzki and Jerry Stackhouse. The Dallas Mavericks have clinched the NBA’ s best record with five games to go. Nowitzki and Stackhouse were Dallas’ leading scorers in a 96- 86 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night that sealed the top seed this postseason, then coach Avery Johnson announced right away that they wouldn’ t be joining the club on a road trip to Minnesota. ` ` I told them if I see them on the plane, I’ ll fine them, ‘ ‘ Johnson said. It makes sense. With home- court guaranteed in every round of the playoffs, one less round- trip flight and one less game is far more important in the Mavericks’ big- picture goal of getting back to the NBA finals and this time winning the title they let slip away last summer. ` ` We didn’ t come into the season trying to be No.

1 ( seeded) , we came into the season trying to finish the year with a win, ‘ ‘ Johnson said. ` ` If we continue to pay attention to details, and don’ t skip a step, and don’ t make too much of ourselves, we have a chance of really kicking it into another gear. There’ s still another level for us to go. ‘ ‘ Nowitzki scored 12 of his 26 points in a row during the third quarter, and Stackhouse scored 18 off the bench in what might’ ve been a preview of a first- round playoff series. Well, sort of.

The Clippers, who fell to 37- 39, were without Sam Cassell and Tim Thomas, both of whom likely will be back if the team makes the playoffs. ` ` We tried everythingg we could do and we did it well some of the time, but we didn’ t do it enough, ‘ ‘ coach Mike Dunleavy said. ` ` Defensively, I thought in the first half we did a great job on Nowitzki, but in the second half we didn’ t do as good. . . .

We didn’ t get good enough help on him at times. ‘ ‘ In their first opportunity to wrap up the top spot, the Mavericks never trailed by more than a basket. They started pulling away in the final minutes of the first half, going up by seven at the break, then scored the first six points of the third quarter. Nowitzki’ s flurry followed, keeping Dallas comfortably ahead. The Clippers got within nine points with about 2 minutes left.

The shot clock nearly ran out on Dallas’ next possession, but Josh Howard stepped back and nailed a 3- pointer with 1: 41 left and the Mavericks pulled away for their franchise- record- extending 64th victory – and the first No. 1 seed in club history. ` ` It’ s good we got that taken care of, ‘ ‘ said Howard, who scored 16 points. Devin Harris scored 14 and Devean George had 11 for Dallas.

The bad news for the Mavs was that center Erick Dampier left in the opening minutes with a sprained right shoulder. Johnson said Dampier was scheduled to have an MRI Tuesday, but was still expected to make the trip to Minnesota. Corey Maggette led Los Angeles with 24 points and Elton Brand scored 20. Jason Hart had 14 points and eight assists. The Mavericks won the season series against the Clippers 2- 1, with Los Angeles’ win coming on Nov.

8, during Dallas’ 0- 4 start to the season. A 12- game winning streak followed, and the Mavs have been atop the league pretty much ever since, setting various NBA and franchise records along the way. They could still tie the second- most wins in league history, but would have to go 5- 0 the rest of the way in games that are now otherwise meaningless.

Nowitzki and Stackhouse will play again Friday night at home against Utah. Other regulars will get that game off, Johnson said. Dallas finishes with five games in eight days. The last two are back- to- back on the West Coast and there’ s no telling what kind of lineup the Mavericks will have in those games. Howard and Stackhouse returned after sitting out the previous game, Howard because of a sprained ankle and Stackhouse merely for rest.

His legs sure looked fresh went he flew to the rim and shoveled in a lob pass with one hand while being fouled from behind. The Clippers opened the game 8- of- 11, mostly on mid- range jumpers, but their last lead was 23- 21. Notes: After Stackhouse’ s nifty one- handed, alley- oop scoop with 2. 9 seconds left in the first quarter, the Clippers caught the Mavs asleep. James Singleton threw about a 90- foot pass that Brand caught in the middle of the lane.

He turned and made the short jumper pretty easily. . . . The technical on Dunleavy came just 25 seconds into the second half for griping about a non- call on a stripped ball by Devean George. Dunleavy later talked officials into reversing their call on an out- of- bounds play, drawing a laugh from George. . . .

Dallas made its first 22 free throws. The Clippers were 16- of- 16.

ontario credit counselling

BOISE, Idaho ( AP) – No need to trademark this slogan, even if it did work perfectly for Missouri this time. ` ` 20 Minutes of Hell. ‘ ‘ It was more than enough to lift Leo Lyons, De. Marre Carroll and the Tigers to a 78- 59 win over Cornell in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday. Lyons finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Carroll, the coach’ s nephew, had all but two of his 13 points in the second half to help the third- seeded Tigers ( 29- 6) pull away after a slow opening 20 minutes. ` ` I thought the second half was typical of our basketball team all year long, ‘ ‘ said coach Mike Anderson, a longtime assistant of Nolan Richardson’ s in Arkansas when ` ` 40 Minutes of Hell’ ‘ was a college hoops catchphrase.

Anderson is trying to bring that intensity to Missouri, and it has led to the program’ s first NCAA appearance in six years – and first win.

Next up for the Tigers in the West Regional: a second- round game against Marquette on Sunday.

Ryan Wittman led the Ivy League champions with 18 points and by controlling the pace, 14th- seeded Cornell ( 21- 10) found itself trailing by only four at the half. But Mizzou’ s talent took over after the break and the win gave the Big 12 a clean sweep – six wins, no losses through the first round of the tournament. ` ` Once I got into the locker room, my teammates were looking up to me, ‘ ‘ Carroll said. ` ` They really told me to be the junkyard dog that I am. ‘ ‘ Led by the junkyard dog, the Tigers opened the lead to double digits shortly after halftime and coasted in. They got easy layups by making the extra pass, and it showed in the stat sheet: Carroll finished with five assists and J. Tiller had six, as Mizzou finished with 19 assists on 28 baskets. Kim English hit three 3- pointers to finish with 13 points.

On defense, Missouri’ s full- court trap also started taking its toll.

Anderson said the fact that Cornell had only nine turnovers – and only three at halftime – actually pleased him. Indeed, sometimes you can’ t win for losing when you’ re playing Mizzou. ` ` That plays right into our hands because maybe it means they’ re more concerned about not turning it over than what they’ re trying to do on offense, ‘ ‘ he said. Point well made. Wittman shot 4- for- 11 from 3- point range, and the nation’ s third- best team from behind the arc made only six 3s all day – not enough to succeed at this level.

Cornell fell to 0- 5 lifetime in the tournament and the Ivy League stayed winless since Princeton beat UNLV back in 1998. Still, this was much more competitive than Cornell’ s 77- 53 loss to Stanford in the first round last year. ` ` To me, the underrated thing with Mike’ s team is their offense, ‘ ‘ Cornell coach Steve Donahue said. ` ` They don’ t turn the ball over. They share the ball. ‘ ‘ Missouri made 12 of its first 22 shots in the second half to start pulling away. With Wittman not at his best, Cornell tried going into 7- foot- 1 center Jeff Foote.

Facing only single coverage, he got great position inside but had trouble finishing when the game was still competitive. His final line still looked decent: 5- for- 11 for 12 points and 10 rebounds. Cornell shot only 35 percent and with the game getting out of reach, frustration started to show. Holding the ball and trying to create room on the sideline, Wittman pinged Zaire Taylor with a nasty elbow. The refs checked out the play on the monitor but decided only an offensive foul – not a flagrant – was in order.

Overall, it turned into a nice tune- up for Mizzou, a school troubled with NCAA problems and coaching changes for much of this decade. Even this year, the Tigers were picked as a second- division team in the Big 12, but Anderson’ s ( or Richardson’ s) system started taking hold, wearing teams down and turning the Tigers into legit contenders. ` ` The runs, when the defense is good, they’ re going to come, ‘ ‘ Anderson said. Carroll was the MVP when the Tigers won the Big 12 tournament last week, another nice reward for transferring to Missouri to help out his uncle after the system at Vanderbilt wasn’ t to his liking.

And speaking of family, with Missouri comfortably ahead, Anderson was able to get his son, Michael Anderson Jr. , into the game for a minute at the end – a nice close for a team that has built itself on family and character as much as the frenetic pace since the coach arrived from UAB three years ago. Last January, with the program languishing and his job hardly secure, Anderson suspended five players before a conference game against Nebraska.

Missouri lost, but the coach said it ` ` wasn’ t even a decision’ ‘ – better to send the right message than get a win. Six months before that, Carroll, the 6- 8 forward from Birmingham, put his life on the line and got shot in the foot while playing peacemaker in a fight. ` ` Once I transferred here, everything started going wrong, ‘ ‘ he said of the incident.

But Anderson asked him to keep the faith, and because he did, he and the Tigers get to celebrate an NCAA tournament win.

Tampa. Bay. com reports. The site was accessible again on Wednesday. On Monday, the group said it was upset that the head of a group known as Food Not Bombs was arrested in Orlando.

That group had been feeding large numbers of homeless people in an Orlando park in defiance of an ordinance requiring permits to feed groups in downtown parks. In retaliation, the hackers said they would take down several websites and would not stop until the activist is released. ” Every day we will launch a new … attack on a different target, ” the group said in a statement. Tuesday’ s incident follows attacks on the websites for the Orlando Chamber of Commerce and Universal Studios last week, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Anonymous is also credited with shutting down and Visa in support of . Inquiries with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Orlando Mayor’ s office were not immediately returned, My.

Feeling like you need a boost? Here are 7 pick- me- up tricks that will have you re- energized in no time. Get a Whiff of Citrus The smells of oranges, lemons, and grapefruits have been shown to be energizing, so simply add a slice or two of your favorite to a glass of water. & # 160; Or introduce citrusy scents into your morning routine, since several major beauty brands— Suave, Dove, and Dial, to name a few— now offer citrus- infused, wake- up- the- body washes.

For a quick midday refresher, moisten a cotton ball with a few drops of citrusy bergamot oil and inhale. Pull Your Hair No, really. “ If you gently take handfuls of hair and pull the skin away from your scalp to get blood flowing to that area of the head, you can relieve a lot of potentially tiring tension, ” says Marlene Merritt, a doctor of Oriental medicine and a nutritionist at the Merritt Wellness Center, in Austin, Texas.

Exhale Flushing out toxins helps the body run more efficiently, which also means you’ ll have more energy. Simply lie in bed for two extra minutes in the morning and focus on taking deep breaths, since “ many of our toxins are expelled by breathing, ” says Karas.

Be Nice to a Stranger “ Sure, the sentiment feels a little bumper stickery, but when you do something kind, your energy goes up, ” says nutritionist Jonny Bowden, author of The 150 Most Effective Ways to Boost Your Energy . Starbucks customers at drive- throughs around the country have been paying for the next customer behind them in a grassroots acts- of- kindness movement. Find other ideas at actsofkindness. org. Pop a Peppermint Smelling peppermint “ stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which stimulates the area of the brain responsible for arousal and can make you more alert, ” says Hirsch. ( So that’ s how Santa stays up all night) .

Do Interval Exercise in the Morning “ Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University, in England, found that exercising before or during lunchtime leads to a more productive workday, ” says Karas. & # 160; But don’ t spend 45 long minutes on the treadmill at one consistent pace. Bowden notes that alternating bursts of rapid activity, like running, with slower activity, like walking, over the course of about a half hour is a more energizing way to work out than endurance- focused exercise. Finally, in addition to your regular workout, one- minute sets of jumping jacks throughout the day will get your blood flowing.

Show Your Hands Some Love “ Take a golf ball and roll it between your desktop and your hand, from the base of the thumb, where your hand webs out, down to the wrist, ” says Kevin Kunz, a coauthor of Complete Reflexology for Life . “ There’ s a really sensitive spot there. Stimulating it will perk you up, ” says Kunz.

Set behind hedges and a wide lawn, this B& B is a short walk from the village center.
A bit more upscale than most of the properties along Route 28, but still with extremely reasonable rates, the Bayside overlooks pristine salt marshes and, beyond them, Lewis Bay.
