Buenos Aires has everything and everything is all you need for this Winter Season in South America. There are a lot of great places to visit in Argentina but most are far away and would require more time. Buenos Aires is the place to land and start to make plans, consider options thinks about where to go, make choices and decisions.

El viernes pasado, en una presentación de productos y servicios relacionados a la hospitalidad y a la gastronomía en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, tuve la suerte de reencontrarme, una vez más, con un poeta y escritor porteño, hijo de uno de los hombres que mejor supo retratar con su prosa esta maravillosa ciudad.
El encuentro no fue planeado, en realidad mi presencia estaba más ligada a los restaurantes que al hostel, pero el hombre, conocedor del trabajo que realizo a diario en Internet para difundir la actividad que desarrolla el albergue y todo lo que tiene para ofrecer Buenos Aires, a través de este blog, del blog en WP y en el Tumblelog y la intensa actividad que desarrollo en distintas redes sociales, palabras más, palabras menos me dijo lo siguiente: “Lentamente, con imágenes o palabras, te vas convirtiendo en un gran contador de la cotidianeidad porteña….. y Buenos Aires siempre premia“.

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES – THE 2008 SUMMARY, BLOGGING, NETWORKS, AWARDS, A VERY HARD WORK

It´s strange to do a balance in these times of crisis and come to the conclusion that despite of everything, 2008 was a great year to the Hostel Colonial.

With no doubts, this was the year of the consolidation of the positioning that I´ve been working in the last days, a strategy that have increased our annual guests percentage, that came to a 60% average per year, in a market like Buenos Aires, where the offers have increased exponentially and the demand tends to retract.

Obviously, the money invested was $0, which potentialize the success of our job. Now, I actually think that the case of the Hostel Colonial should be studied, analized and considered as a reference in the Web 2.0 for this type of accommodation, but, of course, the web is a giant and the Hostel Colonial is too small.

The work done with the social networks also was the consolidation of a effort, the wish and the sinergy generated in Twitter, Blip.fm (the great revelation), Orkut (our main access to Brazil), Facebook and Plurk.

This blog was completely redesigned and I really made tiring trips by Buenos Aires to shot almost 400 published images and more than 1000 that were discarded, all of them with the IPhone Camera Pro, a very good software for this gadget, essential for a modern traveler. For the second consecutive year, we won the Blogger´s Choice Awards, an effort with the guys from the hostel staff, a blogging strategy there´s a marketing one that helps to increase the traffic in almost the double (about 3000 unique visitors month) and convert the Hostel Colonial in a 2.0 trademark. I´ve opened an account in MySpace and will begin to work on it very soon, and if we had to be in Clarín Blogs, the most important journal in Argentina, there is also a space for the Hostel Colonial.

We´re still the only hostel in the world on the T-List and day by day we´re improving our presence in Tumblr and Twitter, the microblogging databases that I like the most. To finish and close the cycle of 2008, our new blog is already online and being adjusted. It was developed in WordPress and represents a great challenge for 2009, at least in these virtual environments, with no doubts, a great year.

É um tanto estranho fazer um balanço em meio a uma crise sem precedente e chegar à conclusao de que apesar de tudo, 2008 foi um grande ano para o Hostel Colonial. Sem dúvidas, foi o ano da consolidaçao do posicionamento sobre o qual venho trabalhando nos últimos tempos, uma estratégia que tem melhorado nossa porcentagem de ocupaçao anual, chegando a situar-la em índices superiores a 60% em média/ano, em um mercado como Buenos Aires, onde a oferta tem crescido exponencialmente e a demanda tende a retrair-se. Obviamente a inversao foi de $0, o que potencia o sucesso do trabalho empreendido. A essa altura já penso que o Hostel Colonial teria que ser um caso de estudo e um referencial na Web 2.0, especialmente para este tipo de alojamento, mas claro, a web é muito grande e o Hostel Colonial muito pequeno.
O trabalho nas redes sociais também foi a consolidaçao do esforço, a vontade e a sinergia gerada em Twitter, Blip.fm (a grande revelaçao), Orkut (nosso grande acesso ao Brasil), Facebook e Plurk. O design deste blog foi refeito em sua totalidade e realmente empreendí roteiros cansativos por Buenos Aires para produzir as quase 400 imagens publicadas e as outras 1100 que foram descartadas. HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES INTRODUCE OUR BLOGWEB ON WORDPRESS

Why all the work with every day that I had to get into this? The blog takes work, the blogs of the restaurants, too. Managing restaurants is a very hard work. Being present in different social networks takes a lot of time. Well, and doesn´t end here, however, be a father of three little kids and husband, is also a great job, very gratifying indeed.
It was necessary to add a new task and a new challenge? Yes, definitely. Why not? The technology, communication and marketing are changing continuously and at a incredible speed. Ok, will wonder what I´m talking about?
Simply a new communication tool (one more …) I’d like to call blogweb, as a matter of relevance. A great work done by Alejandro Velazquez , a turning point between an old web page, the blog on Blogger (this blog!!), the microblog on Tumblr and my introduction as editor in the Wordpress world.
Why so many developments for a hostel? Because I believe that this would be doing all things. Business are business, but it’s nothing if one doesn´t take risks, if it doesn´t do things with passion.
No matter the size of my business, no matter the money, if one day one of my kids can say – My dad was the one who introduced me to the Web 4.0. A major objective. That’s going to live every time, that’s what I intend for my life and Hostel Colonial is part of that.
Evolution, and achieves the best results. I don´t know how many hostels do a job like this. I have the perception that this hostel, from here, from Buenos Aires, will be a major reference (I think it´s). That’s all for now, will soon be online the new project, you can see a breakthrough here.

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES – A NEW BLOG DESIGN

Finally, the Hostel Colonial blog has a new design. The classic Blogger template has been changed in his appearance (basically in the lack of it) and visually enhanced.
It took me a long time to decide how to handle the job, did not find templates that I liked. I looked at Mashable , in Pyzam, but nothing. Nor was any web designer who specializes in blogs and to make a design as seriously.
One day on the Internet, and almost by chance I met Cookieface, a design and news blog. The author of this site is also blogs designer. Bingo. His name is Alejandro Velazquez, @alvelazquez for those who are followers in Twitter.

We contacted, we are talking about two hours and we agreed in five minutes. My idea: Buenos Aires + Hostel + Backpackers + Web 2.0.
The result has been a very accessible blog. Access from smartphones as IPhone or Nokia N Series has practically no make mistakes and the site can be viewed very quickly. The right column was simplified, were eliminated widgets and Javascript code that made the site very slow.
I really like the blog but as it became more I like the challenge that we are taking these days. Our official website will be completely redesigned in Wordpress, a very hard work, so in a short time will be two blogs, each with its function and its functionality.
People know now, Hostel Colonial Buenos Aires used Blogger and soon also use Wordpress. Or maybe you can´t be well with God and the Devil? Humm!!! We’ll see. It´s part of the bet and I like that risk.

New Design

BUENOS AIRES ME MATA – BLOGS, REDES SOCIALES Y UN VIAJE AL PASADO PARA CONSTRUIR EL FUTURO

Buenos Aires me mata. Recuerdos de los años ochenta, retratos transformados en maravillosas palabras que eran reproducidas en su columna de los días viernes en el suplemento Sí del Diario Clarín por la periodista Laura Ramos.
Coetarios y no tanto nos identificábamos con las vivencias de esa tribu urbana y disímil compuesta por otras tantas tribus que recalaban en “La Nave”, un boliche de la ciudad que hacía las veces de nexo aglutinante, deslices diarios, desamores y frustraciones, reviente de democracia recién adquirida al mejor estilo Madrid que indefectiblemente culminaba en un viaje lisérgico dada su carga de surrealismo por la noche porteña.
Viajes, mirando en retrospectiva, pueden descubrirse ciertos paralelismos, sobre todo para aquellos que vivimos este momento y desde nuestra adolescencia, también aquél momento iniciático, casi parecido a la forma en que socializamos en Facebook o Twitter, sin dudas dos de las redes sociales más activas en la Argentina y en las que Hostel Colonial tiene un alto grado de participación.
Sólo parecido, porque no tiene el vértigo de esa noche que nos consumía, sin sudores de excitación, sin el sabor de un beso o el chisporroteo de pieles que se rozan. Personas devenidas en personajes y en consecuencia con esta época, personajes convertidos en avatares.
Buenos Aires me mata. La vida, de hecho, sólo tiene un final posible, podemos optar al estilo Elige tu propia aventura por una u otra página e ir cambiando el modo y las diversas formas en que la vamos llevando o como nos permiten llevarla, ese es el desafío y el placer de vivirla. Buenos Aires me mata. Me llena también de vida, me fascina, es la ciudad que elegí conocer fluctuando desde lo más sórdido a lo más exclusivo, aquí vivo, aquí trabajo y doy trabajo a casi 200 personas entre el hostel y los restaurantes, la disfruto, la odio, la amo, detesto su feroces contrastes y aún me deslumbra su paleta de colores, extraño cada vez más la calle, ese bien intangible que dejamos que nos apropiaran, ruido, oscuridad, el sol que quema.
Tango y rock, humedad, café, cerveza y malbec, el hipotálamo vibrando a fuerza de la cumbia omnipresente. Humos propios y ajenos, un instante wi fi y volvemos a convertirnos en italianos que hablamos español mientras leemos el New York Times. Ciegos de tanto hablar, sordos a fuerza de politonos, caminando aún sin piernas. Dualidad constante, casi como una obsesión, forma parte del ser porteño, yo soy porteño.
Buenos Aires me mata, los invito a conocerla, desde este blog, desde todos los ámbitos de socialización virtual en los que participo o mejor aún, emprendamos un viaje a ese pasado tan cercano y quizás sea un viaje al futuro. Conocernos, volver a vernos, compartir, ser solidarios por elección y si forma parte de la incorrección, mejor aún.
Buenos Aires me mata. Leo los diarios del Domingo, Perfil publica una nota sobre redes sociales y el impacto futuro que tendrán en el país, ya que aún el fenómeno no ha explotado y la nota de tapa de de La Nación Revista está dedicada a Matt Mullenweg, el creador de Wordpress y su visita a Buenos Aires hace unos meses.
Blogs y redes, Buenos Aires, Rosario, Córdoba, Mar del Plata, algo muy fuerte se está gestando y este va a ser el año, gente que busca gente (otra idea para Bagnato pero en formato TV 2.0), búsquedas que intentan eludir el aislamiento virtual de los 90´, tiempo en que el ICQ era usado hasta para dialogar con uno mismo.
Las relaciones y contactos lentamente dejan de ser virtuales y generan proyectos en el mundo real, evolución en el uso de diversas tecnologías para si se quiere involucionar hacia estadíos más primarios en el estilo en que elegimos relacionarnos. Involución no significa precarización, por el contrario, es una nueva vuelta de tuerca hacia las fuentes, creo que nunca un término tan denostado estará tan fuertemente relacionado a la rehumanización de un proceso de construcción social.
Los viajes no son sólo de lujo o de mochila, la mente, la familia, los amigos, el barrio perdido, pueden ser disparadores de miles de universos, de instantes que nos devuelvan a la realidad, es un camino que estamos gestando desde la Web 2.0, volvemos para evolucionar y al menos yo, cuando eso pase, quiero estar ahí, será un lindo viaje.
