When you’re a tourist and you’re visiting a city for the first time, where to stay is the greatest dilemma. Every person who has visited the place will have its say; every hostel web site will extol its location. But those virtues might not be the most cherished by tourism. In Buenos Aires, the three most frequent areas to stay are: Downtown (the first and most traditional), San Telmo and Palermo. Hostel Colonial -located in Downtown- gives you three good reasons (the proximity to sightsees, transportation and security) to choose the area.
The proximity to sightsees: the first thing a traveler seeks, the reason why tourism exists, is to visit and get to know the most particular and traditional of each city. Hardly, somebody would visit Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower, or skips the Empire State in NYC. In Buenos Aires, the logic indicates you must see the Obelisco, visit Plaza de Mayo, the Casa Rosada, the Congress and Puerto Madero. All this places that open tourist guides, are located on Downtown Buenos Aires or just 10 blocks away from it. Here is Hostel Colonial too.
Transportation: probably the second thing that facilitates to get to know and move round the city is transportation. Those who have traveled a lot thank the presence of a subway and a good coverage of the urban transportation. As Downtown is the financial, historic and cultural center of our city, all the transportation departs or arrives here. In a simple way, you can reach any destination. This is something you won’t find in remote neighborhoods as San Telmo and Palermo, where walking to the transportation is inevitable.
Security: it’s perhaps the most important factor for many travelers. Being Downtown the most traditional tourist area, where banks and financial entities have their headquarters, is the most secured zone in Buenos Aires. In fact, the first police station of our city is just around the corner of Hostel Colonial, and the Police Headquarters are just 15 block away.

A clear example of this dichotomy can be seen in two of the quintessential tourist district of Buenos Aires: Puerto Madero and San Telmo. San Telmo, which is one of the oldest in the city and takes its name from the church of San Pedro Gonzalez, preserved, as if it were an old postcard, many of the features of the city from XVlll and XlX century.
Contrary to what one may think, the preservation was not due to a public policy, but the total neglect suffered by the neighborhood for many years and which caused havocs in the cultural and architectural heritage.
The progress didn’t come to this district until the 1990’s when the nostalgy started to become fashionable and a few historical buildings restored by the hand of time and man, began to be exploited as bars and restaurants and others were recycled in a postmodern image. The streets maintained their cobblestone streets, old lanterns were settled and began to detect urban archeology architectural gems of great heritage value. Around the
Plaza Dorrego and its traditional antiques fair, every weekend brings thousands of visitors, he developed
hotels,
hostels, gift shops, tanguerias, clubs, museums and galleries. So this is how
San Telmo looks like today: as a neighborhood that appeals to families during the day and bohemian youth at night. Is also one of the favorites districts for tourists, both for walking and to stay or live, along with
Palermo and
Downtown, the
Hostel Colonial district, because his physiognomy characteristically from
Buenos Aires and local color can be seen in every corner.

Puerto Madero, however, is its antítesis. Nowadays, Puerto Madero (4 blocks walking from Hostel Colonial) is one of the most exclusive and modern neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and attracts visitors from all over the world who come to tour the docks and try the local gastronomy, adapted to international tastes. Both neighborhoods complement and justify each other. Arguably, San Telmo is undoubtedly the most local of the international destinations of Buenos Aires, while Puerto Madero has become the most international of their neighborhoods.

To be continued………

I always return to San Telmo. I never knew why, perhaps that is where I get my best postcards of Buenos Aires. My life goes on and on the Downtown (the Hostel Colonial and my restaurants neighborhood) and Las Cañitas in Palermo, where I live, but every week I give a tour of this neighborhood. One of those places that are a mystery, a place to rediscover, its streets, its smells … San Telmo and the historic places began to draft the country: Argentina. A few blocks from Hostel Colonial begins the walk. Everything is to be seen and photographed, an idea that if we promote from the hostel.
Defensa St. at night
Suipacha St. becomes Tacuari St. and the appearance of Buenos Aires is changing. Move up to the Chile St. and Defensa St., the most beautiful streets in the neighborhood, in my opinion obviously. We are far from the Dorrego Square, but today we will not for this place. The Chile St. is paved and can be seen even from the old tram tracks. We cross the streets Piedras, Chacabuco, Perú, Defensa until Balcarce.

Returned to Defensa St. and walk to the north, we stop at the corner of Alsina St., a few meters, the famous coffee shop and Tango place in Buenos Aires called La Puerto Rico, almost as recognized as the Cafe Tortoni. We arrived at Plaza de Mayo Square, national buildings and historic places, very active, people walking, tourists, people expressing their ideas, the Pink House (National Government House), the “Cabildo“, was the seat of Spanish colonial power, in this place were the events of the May Revolution in 1810, emblematic buildings. The South Diagonal (Julio Argentino Roca Ave.), so there are two streets in Buenos Aires, the other is the North Diagonal(Roque Sáenz Peña Ave) are a rarity that deserves to be walking town, a fact, all the buildings on the North Diagonal have the same height. To end we crossed the square, or we can have a panoramic view from the avenue and we are going to the Metropolitan Cathedral, a magnificent building. On the San Martin St. can see his dome. Was completed, we are 5 blocks from the hostel, back, Buenos Aires still has plenty to see and do.

We are going to have a party!!! Yes, every single day this hostel account with a place for going out. Of course, is optional we respect if you prefer stay quiet, read a book or rest enough for your holidays.
It’s kind of privilege to stay at hostels nowadays specially at the Hostel Colonial, because if you decide a party night we can offer you plenty of facilities, one is at the doors of discotheques you won’t need to make long frizzy queues, or wait that the man at the entrance will like you deciding how much you will pay or even if you enter for FREE.
We definitely guarantee you the entrance with our FREE TICKETS for several types of amusements, music and places where you can stay until the daybreak with own styles and different alternatives. Hip-Hop, Techno, Modern, Drum & Bass, Reggae, etc…
All of our programs are custom-designed by us. Given the same dedication to detail and “Porteños” flare!, Every itinerary we prepare will before be accompanied with a previous meeting named “Pizza Night”, “Caipirinha Night” or “Empanadas Party” so we could be sharing too in groups at the Hostel Colonial living room, making international friends, who knows the one you talk could be the love of your life or drinking a cold beer at the hostel bar “Backpackers Point“. Then all together head to those places below:
Monday: Bar Severino. 968 Hipólito Irigoyen St., the best way to start the week with Electronic, Rock & Pop.
Tuesday: Hype Kika. 5339 Honduras Ave., Palermo Soho. Drum & Bass, Electro rock, Dub. Excellent attention of people that runs the place.
Wednesday: Museum. It’s a famous discothèque in Perú St. , San Telmo at this day but we are concern about the negative remarks shown at the Thorn Three Forums in the Lonely Planet.
Thursday: Aráoz Club. In Aráoz St. and Santa Fé Ave.. That’s a great option for Hip- Hop freaks where you will see qualified dancers and Hip- Hop culture.
Friday: Mandarines. Fascinating atmosphere with Reggaeton for those who like this rhythm, located in Punta Carrasco in front of the Jorge Newbery Airport just 15´ taxi trip from the Hostel Colonial.
Or you can go to Asia de Cuba in Puerto Madero for Latin music or The Sub, Gay discotheque right on Córdoba Ave. and Florida St. (3 blocks walking from Hostel Colonial)
Saturday: Crobar. Marcelino Freyre St. in Palermo Forests. Highly recommended for our staff!!!
Sunday: Club One. 940 Alsina St. . In the afternoons with an amazing building plus they pick up us with a transfer.
We perceive Buenos Aires an “emotion” and as such our itineraries will be tailored to suit every personal preference and style.
Which day would you choose to go out? Or just spontaneously decide with the flow. KEEP IN MIND. In some places problems appear when you dress improperly so you must be aware for taking the right clothing as a good advice: you must not wear, summer fling flaps, gym clothes, or just go with an untidy look as many times. I’ve seen local people and visitors will deny you the entrance. Keep in mind that parties in Buenos Aires goes on between an accurate and stylish sense of the aspect.

Many claim Tango culture as local in the Rio de la Plata, South America but who can say this over all Tango has self identity Tango and is with no doubt authentic and genuine Argentinean artistic expression visible nowadays.
A bit story: Born in the late 19th century right from the depths of the people’s soul. Lew ruffian, arrogance, attitude, showing fierceness, pretentious dance, with some rhythms from candomble, with milonga voices, which was originated in the cabarets, bawdy houses, and brothels, became worldwide known in the early 20th century and was played in different ways: some times with artistic quality.
The world connect the San Telmo (10 blocks south walking from Hostel Colonial) area with Tango and there is a random meeting on Sundays night that the Hostel Colonial Buenos Aires encourage you to go where young, adults, beginners or professional dancers o just passionate ones do it spontaneously
In Dorrego Square after 10:00 p.m. the milonga is not a glamorous show it’s in an open park under the lights of the French paroles it’s a good mix performing a spontaneous spirit that scenery contain the real spirit and treasure of Buenos Aires.

You have not been in
Buenos Aires if you have not seen the old
San Telmo (15 blocks walking from
Hostel Colonial). This historical quarter of the city encompasses the old town.
Its manors have been recycled into modern houses, keeping the old facades, or are the refuge of antique shops.
Dorrego Square becomes the most attractive flea market of
Buenos Aires on Sundays. Old warehouses, a traditional restaurants like “
El Desnivel“, “
Mi Tío“, “
La Vieja Rotisería” and much more highlights of
Buenos Aires.
The antique booths share the cobbled streets with outdoor
Tango shows.

The perfect synthesis of a Sunday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Two treasures of the Buenos Aires city, two completely different neigboorhoods, in stetic and intention, but, with no doubt, complementary. By one side, San Telmo, which name comes from the San Pedro Gonzalez Telmo and keeps, like an old post card, lots of caracteristics of the city of the XVIII and XIX centuries. Oposite to what people may think, San Telmo has not always been this beautiful zone with well conservated historic buildings. It has suffered a lack of care and it has not called the people´s attention until the 90´s.
With the nostalgic boom, the historic and cultural patrimony has been, little by little, renovated and being taken by bars, restaurants, small museums and cultural centres. There were appearing hotels, discos, tango houses and antiques, hand-made gifts and design stores. Nowadays is a very popular to the families in the afternoon and by the night, it´s crowded with young bohemian people by excellence.
By the other side, in Puerto Madero, we can notice an exclusive and modern place that attracts tourists of everywhere, that look for good international cuisine and the sofisticated air of the zone. Puerto Madero has turned into the most international destination of the city, while San Telmo keeps being the favorite of the locals. Two precious porteño treasures that give color and beauty to the proximities of the downtown and the Hostel Colonial.
