HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES – WRITING ABOUT CUYO REGION, WRITING ABOUT MALBEC WINE

The Hostel Colonial receives more and more travelers interested to know the Cuyo region, the states of San Luis, Mendoza and San Juan. The mountains of San Luis have splendid landscapes, unpolluted nature and warm refuges far away from the masive tourism and the noise cities. Some of its attractions are the Conlara Valley, the historic old jesuitic ranches of La Estanzuela and the ecologic reserve in “Rincón del Este”. The small city of San Luis still keeps its cozy colonial streets, beautiful churches and convent.

In Mendoza, one of the most atracctive touristic destinations nowadays in Argentina, the dry and sunny climate, its urban city layout with large and green streets, great parks and the flowers that adornate many of its streets give to the city an ellegant and calm caracteristic. Despite of that, with no doubt, most of the time, the people travel to Mendoza to know its wine routes, where the best argentinian wines are produced, added to a new invention of the local cuisine.

San Juan, on the other hand, is a modern city where there are no remains of the colonial years, due to the earthquake of 1944. Also known by its wine routes, with some old wineries and other modern ones. The Hostel Colonial recommends you to know “La Difunta Correa“, one of the most spread pagan cult of Argentina that receives thousands of followers every year, and the Pie de Palo Mountains. San Juan has also amazing valleys and montain walls that round the state, known by the warm people of its small villages.

Argentine highlight: Malbec wine

The Hostel Colonial invites the lovers of a good argentinian wine to know a little bit of how a Mendoza Malbec winery works. The grape is harvested in early april, before the other varieties like the Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Petit Verdot. The grape is harvested carefully in plastic boxes, to do not get damaged before going to the selection table. To make 1 bottle of a extrapremium wine it´s necessary 2 or 3 kg of grape. The correct time to harvest is decided by tasting the grapes in the wineyard and through laboratory analisis.

The factors that count in the quality control are the color, tannins, sugars and acidity of the fruit. The traditional irrigation in the wineyards of Mendoza is through furrows, the drip irrigation system is only used in the recent wineries. We have to consider how deep and and extended the wine roots are, in the loose and well drained soils of the region, besides of the good climate to the production. These are only some basic info to those who are interested in the subject. You must include a visit to a traditional Mendoza winery in your next trip to Argentina.

TRAVELERS WORDS – POST 3 – RED, RED WINE IN MENDOZA

One of main argentinian “stars” is the wine. Everybody knows that they are as famous as the french or portuguese ones!
I´m far away from being a specialist in this area, I don´t know much about wines and wich one is better with certain sort of foods and things like that, but It´s my favorite to drink with friends, in winter, in summer, with my girlfriend, after a day of hard work…And in my last trip to Buenos Aires, my friends of the Hostel Colonial recommended me a trip to Mendoza, the land of the best wines of the country.
It was not necessary to tell me that twice, Minutes after, I was searching for fly tickets by Internet. Once you arrive in Mendoza, you can find a lot of touristic points to know and things to do.
Looking for wines and everything related to it, I visited some wineries and areas where they produce different sorts of grapes and drinks. Now I know the difference between a Malbec and a Cabernet Sauvignon, and could buy very special wines that had a very low production and you cannot find them in anywhere else.
It is also possible to do adventure and snow tourism and know the natural termic pools that are compared to the biggest european ones!
Sincerely, South America has been surprising me more and more. There´s always a new and fantastic place to know, and Argentina is a country of beautiful landscapes and amazing places to enjoy. Many thanks to the staff of the Hostel Colonial for the tips! I really hope to meet you again in summer, so I can write something about your beer! ;)
