Cellists scale the heights on

After tackling the four highest peaks in the UK and Ireland, running a half marathon and climbing up to the roofs of 42 cathedrals a all with two-stone instruments on their backs a the Extreme Cellists had to rack their brains to come up with their most extreme challenge yet.

They are setting off on the 192-mile coast-to-coast walk designed and made famous by author Alfred Wainwright.

On each of the 14 days of their hike, the threesome a who will once again be carrying their cellos every step of the way a will stop for three performances to raise money for spinal cord injury charity Aspire and Sheffield children’s cancer charity PACT.

The group a Jeremy Dawson, 34, and Clare watches f Wallace, 50, from Sheffield, and James Rees, 30, from Ely in Cambridgeshire a met while members of a church choir and formed the Extreme Cellists in 2003.

Over the years their increasingly arduous challenges have raised more than A[pounds sterling]15,000.

Their last in April last year involved running the Sheffield Half Marathon with cellos on their backs, stopping for two performances along the way.

In summer 2006 they played on the replica Ceinture roof of all 42 English cathedrals in 12 days, raising more than A[pounds sterling]5,000 for Aspire and Shelter and, in 2008 raised a similar amount playing on the tallest mountains in Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland.

Mr Dawson said: “We’ve previously done challenges involving a lot of mountain climbing and challenges involving daily endurance, but here we’re combining both into one.

“Training has been a case of going out into the Peak District with cellos on our backs and climbing hills for the day.

“We’re sure that our training will pay off, though, and hope that people appreciate the challenge and help us raise in excess of A[pounds sterling]5,000 for the charities this year.”

The Extreme Cellists will set off from St Bees in Cumbria today to walk the route over the Lake District, the Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors before finishing in Robin Hood’s Bay on August 6.

Man walks in hopes of reunitin

OCEANFRONT

Somewhere along a Tennessee highway, Timothy Scott almost lost hope.

Leather Pandora

“It’s just so hot and really hard getting up and down these hills,” Scott said. “I have done lots and lots of sweating and trying to drink plenty of water.”

The 29-year-old set out July 2 to walk 2,594 miles with only a small duffel bag of clothes and a hand-decorated box on wheels. He left his Oceanfront home to walk to San Diego, and eventually to cross legally into Mexico if he has enough money. His final destination is Acapulco, where his wife and children live.

“I will potentially face the worst weather Mother Nature has to throw at me,” Scott said. “The heat of the summer now walking across Tennessee, and the snow of the winter in the Rockies.”

Scott set out on his cross-country walk to raise money and awareness about his family living in Acapulco. He hopes to work along the way or collect donations to help him get enough money to bring his family to the United States.

“My wife worries every day for ed hardy wholesale me being out here on the road,” Scott said. “But I had to do something drastic. My life isn’t complete without my family.”

Scott met his wife, Mely Esther Scott, in 2006 at work. Mely, 25, was in the country illegally. She returned to Mexico to reunite with her two children – Karla, 8 and Angel, 5, who is partially paralyzed. When she left, she was 7 months pregnant with Scott’s baby, Katherine, who is now 2.

Since her departure, Scott has tried to save up money to legally bring his family to the United States. It will take more than $3,000 to get the paperwork she needs.

“I don’t have to pay for an apartment or help my mom with issues that come up now,” Scott said about why he is able to leave Virginia Beach and spend time walking across the nation. “Everything is taken care of at home, and I am focused on getting money for my family.”

So far, Scott said he hasn’t received much money. A few people along the way have given him change and he has used that to buy water and food. At night, he sleeps in the box he pulls behind him to save on hotel costs.

Charene Smith, a friend in Virginia Beach, and her husband, helped Scott by building him a computer. They also set up a fund at Bank of America where people can donate directly to his cause.

“We want to help him accomplish his dream of reuniting with his family,” Smith said. “This is the least we could do.”

Out on the open road, Scott takes whatever help he can get. A woman took him to a store to help him fix the wheel bearings on his cart and others gave him money for food and water. New York Rangers

Scott said he will not be deterred. He is walking 12 to 15 hours a day, covering at least 25 miles.

“If I was looking for comfort, I wouldn’t be walking across America,” Scott said. “It’s painful living without my family, and now I can share my story with everyone I meet.”

Connections with Dummy’s famil

ed hardy clothing I HAVE been contacted by Mr Bill Merry, of Leicester – a veteran of Arctic convoys to Russia during the war – who has one or two things to tell me about the “good old days”.

Stories about Dummy Hancock, the newspaper man in Wharf Street, Leicester, brought back memories. Mr Hancock’s granddaughter, Mrs Pat Thorpe, recently got in touch and this reminded Mr Merry of when he lived in the prefabs in Allinson Road.

“We knew her mam, Mavis, and dad, Tom Elliott – and I bet she remembers the Merry family.

My wife used to look after them.

“One of Dummy Hancock’s sons had a confectionery shop in Loughborough and, if my memory serves me right, it’s still a thriving confectionery wholesale business today.”

Stories about the “Morsey” have also interested Mr Merry. He says: “It was always Sknown as the Morsey in the Syston Street and Wharf Street area.

“Where it got its name from, I do not know.

“I do know that in the old days it was known as Willow Brook, because it ran behind houses in Willowbrook Road, which are still there.

“It started in Billesdon Coplow and came through Humberstone Park and through tunnels across Leicester to enter behind Syston Street and into the canal under Belgrave Road.”

Data Foundry Announces It Has

Data Foundry, a leading provider of wholesale and retail data center outsourcing, colocation, and disaster recovery services, today announces it has filed comments in the Federal Communications Commission’s Notice of Inquiry (NOI) on Broadband Internet Access in support of the reclassification of the transmission components of broadband Internet access as “telecommunications service.”

The reclassification would mean that the transmission component would once again be subject to the consumer and competitive safeguards provided by the common carrier rules found in Title II of the Communications Act of 1934.

Data Foundry also filed comments stating it does not agree with the retail approach to identifying the transmission component suggested by the Commission in the NOI. The retail approach would necessarily result in regulation of the higher layers of the Internet, and not just the basic physical network layers used for broadband Internet access. Regulating the higher layer functions such as IP and TCP would result in Voice Over IP (VoIP) and IPTV also being classified as regulated transmission services. Instead, Data Foundry recommends that the Commission incorporate the approach that has successfully worked for the first 20 years of the Internet’s existence which requires facility based providers of broadband Internet access to offer at wholesale, on a common carrier basis, a transmission component that consists of only Layer 1 and Layer 2 of the OSI network model.

Making this important change to the classification of the transmission components of broadband Internet access will ensure that regulation is appropriately directed at the essential element, which is the physical transmission network, and not at the functions or services that can be provided independent of that transmission. Re-instating the successful wholesale model that allowed the creation of the Internet will once again facilitate innovation, promote competition, and allow market mechanisms to work effectively. This reclassification will also return the expectation of privacy to global Internet services by legally restricting, under the rules of common carriage, Internet access providers from performing Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), or otherwise monitoring or surveilling the content of users’ communications without express consent unless a proper law enforcement wiretap order has been issued.

This will provide more jobs

I REFER to reports that the government will soon announce measures to liberalise the Foreign Investment Committee (FIC) guidelines.

Some think that in the wake of other liberalisation moves recently, this might mark the beginning of the end of the Bumiputera agenda.

Wholesale Prada Handbags I don’t see what all the fuss is about. What does the FIC do for me as a Bumiputera?

Permodalan Nasional Bhd gives me a good return; government scholarships offer a chance for my children to study in good Porsche Design Watch universities; and Bumiputera discounts help me get houses at good prices.

In the good old days, we could make good money on initial public offerings (IPOs).

LACOSTE Clothes

Today, there is no point in applying for shares since, most of the time, investing in IPOs means losing money.

What we need to do is to strengthen the economy and offer better opportunities for workers and entrepreneurs. So, if liberalisation of FIC guidelines means more investments and jobs for everyone, why not?
