Cape campaign begins

The Cape Cod & Islands specialty license plate remains the most popular plate in the state – but it’s no surprise that it’s turning out to be tough to compete with the Red Sox in the popularity department. There are more than 48,000 Cape & Islands plates (with images of the Nauset lighthouse and Gay Head cliffs) attached to vehicles. But the Sox plate, which benefits the Jimmy Fund, is close behind, with nearly 43,000 distributed, according to the Cape & Islands license plate marketing committee.

The committee is ramping up a new campaign to draw attention to its plate, which has generated more than $17 million for economic development efforts on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket since it became available 14 years ago. Committee Chairman Paul Rumul tells me this campaign is aimed at recognizing the people who already spend an extra $50 every two years to display the plates on their cars. Spotters will hand out $5 Ben & Jerry’s coupons at certain spots on the Cape during the next few weeks to drivers with the Cape & Islands plate.

The committee is also conducting a contest through mid-August for a new tagline. Rumul says the committee might keep its current slogan – “Keep sand in your shoes all year long” – even if it adopts a new one. The entries are pouring into the committee’s Facebook page, but I have a feeling that one entry – “Cape Cod: No Tourists Allowed” – won’t be among the entries making the final cut.

Westminster Dodge wins

As the only Chrysler dealership left in the city of Boston, it sure seemed like a mistake when the Bickford family learned last year that it would lose the right to sell new cars at Westminster Dodge. That’s why it’s reassuring to see the good guys win in the end, as an arbitrator has ruled that Chrysler should give the Bickfords back their franchise. In From Chrysler’s perspective, the only mark against Westminster Dodge was that it only sold Dodges. Chrysler’s “Project Genesis” plan to cut models and consolidate dealerships had little room for solo Jeep and Dodge franchises.

When Congress created an arbitration process for dealers to try to get their franchise back, the Bickfords jumped at the chance. They were surviving as a used car dealership. But selling Dodges at the Morrissey Boulevard location was the primary mission since Charlie Bickford bought the business in the 1970s. His sons will now get the chance to build on that legacy. Jim Bickford, the dealership’s general manager, says he’s not sure when they’ll reinstall the Dodge Pentastar. But he expects it will probably be within 60 days.

Yodle hiring in Boston

There aren’t many businesses significantly increasing their workforces in Boston – or anywhere, for that matter. That’s why it’s great to see one New York firm preparing to San Jose Sharks more than quadruple its Boston staff.

Yodle Inc. plans to add nearly 80 people within the next year. That’s in addition to the 20 workers the firm currently employs at its new office on Lincoln Street, near South Station. Nearly 150 job candidates attended a job fair and open house at the Boston office on Thursday.

CEO Court Cunningham tells me Yodle has found a sweet spot in the online world by trying to bridge the gap between the traditional Yellow Pages still used by small businesses and the

‘Modest’ Denise, ‘flat’ Ulrika

Byline: Lauren Booth

This week, the TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson and the actress Cote d-Ivoire Denise Van Outen, left, hit the headlines for stories about their chest areas.

i’m not shying away from using the word breasts here, by the way, because what would be the point? These days every paper and magazine features pages and pages dedicated to gossip about them. Are so-and-so’s saggy, ageing, pert, perky, natural, enhanced, reduced or (shock horror) causing an unsightly bulge in a wrong-sized bra? Ms Van Outen gave an interview in which she said that part of the reason she gave up breastfeeding within three weeks of giving birth was that she didn’t fancy getting papped while breastfeeding her newborn baby in the post office. Big news? Meanwhile, Ulrika’s chest-plate was indeed snapped, out shopping with her daughter Bo Eva, leading to pages of comment about over-dieting and fake well-wishing for the ‘frail’ star.

it’s time to stop dressing up a male-led nosiness about breasts as some kind of social commentary or, more implausible still, a genuine concern about the health choices of famous women.

brochure printing

it would be more respectful to British womankind if all newspapers had a Page Three stunna. Better that than carrying on with this charade where we’re all reduced and categorised by the size, weight, health and usefulness of our breasts.

‘Modern’ mega dairy models not

The University of Kentucky sold off its large dairy herd; now the University of Minnesota has followed suit.

This is the fourth university to quit “Big Dairying.” The interesting part is that the university was given 436 acres in the early 1900s. Even they could not make it with all their donations and financial support. You can’t teach an ag model that swarovski Roma is not financially and environmentally sustainable. If it fails in the real world, and sets students up to call a suicide hot line for farmers, what is the point of the “modern” mega dairy?

On July 23, the University of Minnesota-Crookston auctioned off its entire dairy herd. This was done in conjunction with the ending of its dairy program. The university will consolidate its operations around the state. The Northwest Regional JIMMY CHOO Shoes Outreach and Research Center’s decision to sell its 235 head of dairy cattle was the result of budget cuts and determining how to best serve the UM campuses by eliminating duplication in programs. This decision saves UMC about $300,000 annually, but it also will result in a job loss of six or seven.

The university is considering a proposal to expand its beef and sheep programs and start a new, small-scale dairy program with 30 to 40 cows.

Such a dairy model encourages economic growth in rural communities. We need more farmers and their small dairies to support A Lange & Sohne Watch Replica the local infrastructure. We need to repair the damage “Modern Mega Dairy Models” have inflicted on the agricultural landscape.

Merck To Buy Back Riverside Dr

RIVERSIDE – Merck and Co. is going to buy back the pharmaceuticals plant it sold off two-and-a-half years ago, according to a company spokesman.

The New Jersey-based company said it remains committed to the community, as well as the 454 employees, and plans to maintain the workforce.

Merck operated the plant for 58 years before selling it to PRWT Services Inc., a Philadelphia-based firm, in early 2008.

Now that Merck is re-acquiring the Riverside facility, the company plans on continuing its line of production.

“Merck has had a long and successful history at the site,” company spokesman Ronald Rogers said Monday. “The products at the site are critical to our supply chain. Most importantly, they’re critical to our customers. We felt it was important to ensure that the Fashion Jimmy Choo Shoe supply chain continues.”

Rogers couldn’t say who initiated the buyback – Merck or PRWT. However, he expects the sale to be completed Sept. 3. Transition from PRWT to Merck should take about six months, Rogers said.

Mum on price

Rogers wouldn’t comment on how much Merck is paying, saying, “I don’t think we’ve disclosed the terms of the deal. I don’t have any more information on that.”

When Merck sold Cherokee, the price for the 323-acre compound was listed on the deed as $1, a common practice when the actual price is kept mum. Company executives deferred to discuss the actual price tag of the property at the time, but the deed listed the actual cash considered at $3 million. The county-assessed value of the property – which included 60 separate “premises” – was $12,877,350 in 2008. Fair market value was listed on the deed as $58,344,395.

“The focus on the site is on fulfilling current production plans and then the due diligence process,” Rogers said. “We’re committed to making sure that we have continuity of Replica Oris our supply chain.”

Rogers wouldn’t comment on the future of the Riverside location beyond that, saying the future of both the pharmaceutical industry and the economy at large is uncertain. Those factors combine to create the potential for future change.

Merck realigning

In fact, Rogers said, Merck has been undergoing an international realignment. The drugmaker is looking to close eight manufacturing plants and eight research sites globally. Only one of the sites under the gun is in the states, in Miami Lakes, Fla.

The downsizing comes on the heels of Merck’s acquisition of Schering-Plough Corp. Merck, which has roots in 140 countries, plans to reduce its international work force by 15 percent to save $3.5 billion by 2012.

Past promise

When PRWT bought Cherokee, it was a surprise to many.

“My 94-year-old grandmother called and said, ‘I hear you’re dealing drugs,’” Willie F. Johnson, PRWT chairman and CEO said during the press conference Jan. 4, 2008, announcing PRWT’s move into the pharmaceuticals business.

The Philadelphia firm had previously specialized in staffing toll booths, cleaning prisons, processing child support payments, operating locks for the Army Corps of Engineers and maintaining Marine war support ships.

Still, many were confident that PRWT would be able to continue Merck’s tradition of pharmaceutical excellence in River

Can surgery cope with care

MARRABLE HOUSE The proposed extra care home for frail elderly people in Great Baddow. What is it and is it required? The proposal states that the home is for “very frail elderly people over 55″.

handbags j

What are the criteria for “very frail”? Who decides? What is “extra care”? Is such care defined in any form of legislation and who will ensure that it is enforced? What services will be provided and who will bear the cost? In addition to a number of bungalow developments reserved for elderly people in Great Baddow, Palmerston Lodge, Roberts Court, Kingfisher and Hatley’s which are all within a stone’s throw of the Vineyards, provide secure accommodation for elderly people. They each have a manager to look after the welfare of the residents.

Some of these, who are well into their 80s, could be described as “frail” since they require the support by carers on a regular daily basis and are supplied with hot food by the meals on wheels service.

It is an unfortunate fact that elderly people impose a disproportionate demand on the medical services of any community.

The excellent Gt Baddow village surgery is already working at or near maximum capacity. Has any thought been given as to whether the village surgery can deal with the additional demand if this project goes ahead? One wonders if the use of the words “extra care homes for very frail elderly people is designed to generate sympathy for a project which is unnecessary and will be quite unsuitable for a central location in Gt Baddow.

The lack of any form of advance consultation with the village is indicative of the unsatisfactory nature of this project. Are the developers merely trying to recover the cost they incurred when they refurbished the Vineyards flats & shopping area a few years ago? This proposal is unworthy of Gt Baddow and should be confined to the dustbin.

Canada Post and Israel Post Co

Canada Post and Israel Post are today issuing a joint international rate commemorative stamp. This marks more than 60 years of friendship and strong diplomatic relations between the two countries. It is the first joint stamp issue between Canada and Israel. Canada’s diplomatic relationships with Mexico, China and Japan have previously been recognized on stamps and commemorative envelopes.

“Joint stamp issues like this one represent diplomacy in action,” said John Baird, Canada’s Minister of Transport and Minister responsible for Canada Post. “The bond between Canada and Israel continues to yield benefits for each country and its citizens. It is fitting that we celebrate the enduring friendship between our countries.”

Ironically, Jimmy Nace, who lost his battle with cancer last November, was the car owner for Sean Michael, when Michael won the inaugural event in 2007.

Plenty of festivities are planned prior to the running of Saturday’s show, as racing vendors, silent auctions, driver autograph sessions, vintage and current race cars will be displayed, in addition to racing videos and plenty of activities for the kids.
