Police ‘duped’ knife woman bef

A WOMAN who was ‘duped’ into attending Tamworth police station was arrested after officers found weapons in her handbag.

Jane Lesley McConnell was invited to the Spinning School Lane station by officers who claimed they had some property that belonged to her. But when she arrived, the 36-year-old was arrested in connection with another matter and searched.

A batton and a five-inch knife were found in the Caradoc resident’s bag.

Appearing at Tamworth Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, McConnell pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and possessing a knife or sharp-pointed article in a public place.

Prosecuting Mrs Alka Marston told how at around 4pm on October 2, the defendant was stopped in the street outside the station. She was arrested and taken into custody where she told officers: “Just wait until I get these cuffs off.”

In interview, McConnell accepted ownership of the knife and baton. When asked why she carried them the defendant told officers: “Because I want to.”

Mrs Marston said: “She was fully aware they were there in her handbag but she never gave any valid reason. The items were not used just found.”

Defending Mark Moore said the circumstances surrounding the arrest were ‘unusual’.

He said: “My client got a call from the police saying they wanted her to come down to the station to collect some property. She goes to get it but when she gets there the police come out and arrest her.

“Once in custody, her bag is opened and the items are found.

“Her comments were the result of her being thoroughly hacked off about it.

“They are merely a reflection of her frustration at having been duped to go to the police station.”

Magistrates adjourned the case in order for a pre-sentence report to be prepared, covering all options.

Fendi Bags McConnell, who will re-appear before the court on November 5, was granted unconditional bail.
